    Nursing workload acuity (NWA) is the intensity of nursing care required to meet individual patient needs and has long been identified as an important variable to consider when planning nurse staffing resources. A NWA tool was embedded in the electronic health record at a major academic medical center provides critical data to inform development of comprehensive organizational nurse staffing plans. The purpose of this program evaluation was to assess the utility of the NWA tool and provide recommendations for improvement.

    Learner Objectives

    1. Describe a dynamic electronic acuity system for nursing workload within an EHR. 
    2. Describe better strategies to plan staffing based on nursing workload.

    Ida Anderson DNP, RN, NEA-BC; UCLA Health, System Director of Adult Critical Care; Los Angeles, California

    Ida Anderson is an experienced nursing leader who has served in progressive nursing leadership roles for the past 15 years. She is currently the System Director of Adult Critical Care Nursing for UCLA Health. In this role, she has quality, safety, and operational responsibilities for five adult critical care nursing units, the Cardiac Observation Unit, and the Critical Care Transport Team which provides both ground and air transport services for neonates, pediatrics, and adults.

    Rebecca (Suzie) Miltner, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN; Professor Emerita, University of Alabama at Birmingham

    Rebecca (Suzie) Miltner is Professor Emerita at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Miltner is nationally and internationally recognized for her contributions to building capacity for quality improvement (QI) work within academic-practice partnerships and creating innovative quality and safety educational programs that are shaping the next generation of healthcare professional leaders to improve healthcare quality.
